Today’s Birthday March 20: US actor William Hurt (1950-).

William Hurt is known as a Hollywood quiet achiever who takes on challenging and intense roles.

Born on March 20, 1950 in Washington, Hurt spent holidays travelling with his father, who worked for the US State Department.

After going to Tufts University to study theology, Hurt married aspiring actress Mary Beth Supinger in 1971 and followed her to London to study drama.

Upon their return to the US, Hurt studied drama at Juilliard in New York.

After more than a decade together, Hurt and Supinger divorced and he made his professional debut in a stage production of Hamlet.

Hurt’s first major feature-film role was in Altered States (1980) but it was not until he appeared in Body Heat (1981) that he became a star.

Four years later, he won the Best Actor Oscar and a British academy award for his performance in Kiss Of The Spider Woman.

He was again nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his part in Children Of A Lesser God (1986) and Broadcast News (1987).

Hurt went on to appear in films including Until The End Of The World (1991), Smoke (1995), Jane Eyre (1996), One True Thing (1998), The Contaminated Man (2000) and Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001).

In 2006 he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his part in the David Cronenberg film A History of Violence.

Since then, he has played mostly supporting roles in films including Into the Wild (2007), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2013).

In 2010 Hurt starred in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

In 2014, he is due to appear alongside Colin Farrell in the fantasy drama film Winter’s Tale, and as musician Greg Allman in Midnight Rider.
