Today’s Birthday March 21: US actor Matthew Broderick (1962-).
Actor Matthew Broderick is a Broadway and screen star who is still best known for his role in the 1986 film that brought him to international fame, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Born on March 21, 1962 in New York City, Broderick began appearing in theatre workshops when he was 17.
He was soon acting on Broadway in plays such as Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1983). Broderick won a Tony Award for that role.
He made his first film appearances in 1983’s WarGames and Max Dugan Returns.
Though he starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in 1985’s Ladyhawke, he didn’t achieve fame until Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986).
His career continued to grows, but tragedy struck in 1988 when Broderick lost control of a car he was driving in Ireland. His vehicle crashed into an oncoming car, killing a mother and daughter.
Broderick continued working through the resultant barrage of legal problems and media scrutiny. He was eventually convicted of careless driving and fined.
He appeared in films including Glory (1989), The Lion King (1994), The Cable Guy (1996), Godzilla (1998), Inspector Gadget (2000) and The Stepford Wives (2004).
In 2001 Broaderick co-starred on Broadway with Nathan Lane in Mel Brooks’s hit musical The Producers. The pair also appeared in the 2005 film version.
Broderick’s more recent films include Strangers With Candy (2005) and Tower Heist (2011).
In 2014 he is due to appear in the drama-mystery The American Side and the comedy Dirty Weekend.
Broderick married Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997.
The couple have a son, James, and twin daughters, Marion and Tabitha.
